All gardens can seem daunting, but perhaps most of all shady gardens. If you aren’t familiar with all the terms you may look at the label on a plant and wonder what ‘semi-shade’ actually is and if the 4 hours of sun an area gets is enough. You may have a north facing garden but still get good afternoon sunlight, and want to know if that is enough for something that requires ‘Full sun’ ?
You are not alone in wondering these things, and not knowing where or how to begin. Luckily I have a lot of experience planting for shade, in fact I have a north facing border at the end of my own garden that has some of my favourite plants and is beautiful all year round. There’s plenty that can be done.
And its not just things you might be familiar with like ferns. There are flowering bulbs, flowering plants (particularly in spring) and all sorts of shrubs that will take varying degrees of light and shade.
