We’re currently at the end of February as I write this, and in gardens all around i’ve seen snowdrops for a couple of weeks. You might be thinking “Fiddlesticks! I forgot to put in any in September. Guess I have to wait now”. You would be wrong to think that – in fact I encourage people to get snowdrops now instead of September.
Planting now is whats called “in the green” – as it sounds, whilst they are in leaf. I have personally never had much luck planting dry bulbs in the autumn. Same for a lot of clients I have had over the years. If you buy them now in the green, you know for certain they are alive, for one. I find they establish well this way, giving you an amazing flush of white next winter/spring.
There are various websites you can order from to get in the green snowdrops, and I am happy to order in for any of my clients. I recommend for a small area, buy at least 50 and plant in bunches. It just looks better. For very large areas plant over the course of a few years, and as bulbs grow and propagate you can split the clumps and re-plant the extras to fill out the area. Great job for end of Feb and early March!
